While the Lonray has hit the headlines recently with the exploits of Natagora, the Haras de Londray also boasts a rich and ancient past.
The stud was created in 1863 to accommodate the breeding stock of the Duc of Morny, who created the seaside resort and racecourse of Deauville. The stud was acquired 30 years later by Count Jacques le Marois. At this time, the winners of all major French and European races were born at the Lonray.
Today, Bertrand Gouin manages a busy activity on the 75 hectares of phosphorous, limestone and potassium-rich soil of the Haras de Lonray.
The 8 stallion boxes are occupied. After the revelation of the Japanese Divine Light, sire of Cheveley Park Stakes and 1000 Guineas winner Natagora, the stallion has been sold to Turkey.
He has been replaced by 4 new Japanese stallions, 2008 arrivals Great Journey and Samson Happy and Air Eminem and Millennium Bio, who both joined the stud in 2009 through the help of Japan expert Patrick Barbe. The first progeny of Great Journet were born from late February.
The Lonray also stands jumps sire Cléty, Majorien, sire of the useful Major d'Hélène, Green Tango, Garden City and La Trattoria, Vic Toto, an excellent jumper at Auteuil, and finally Arlington Million winner Spirit One who starts stallion duties in 2009.
The two latter stallions return to their birthplace as they were both raised at the Lonray. In addition to this pair and Natagora, the stud has also produced Gr 1 Prix Maurice Gillois winner Ladykish, Noble Kaïd (Gr 3) and Kruscyna (Gr 3) as well as Spirit One's siblings Salsalava and Salsalavie.
The speciality of the Lonray is taking in boarding mares for outside clients, and accommodates around 100 mares all year round.
The stud offeres all breeding services, from gynecological surveillance to breaking-in, as well as foaling, and sales preparation.
